Trail Stations
Station 1
Entrance Archway
Unlike many ordinary archways, the main archway of Haw Par Villa has a very unique design (much like the others around the villa), and the significance it holds to the villa, accompanied by its eye-catching design has made itself an attraction when visiting the villa as well.
Station 2
Eight Immortals
The Eight Immortal are patron saints who are respected by the Chinese for their wisdom and high moral standards. Here they are each carrying an iconic tool meant to help them in their fight against immorality.
Station 3
Guan Yin in Lotus Pond
Guan Yin is a spiritual figure of mercy, and appears in many religious legends such as Guan Yin and the Thousand Arms. Buddhists believe that when they die, they are placed by her in the heart of a lotus and sent to what they term the “pure land”.
Station 4
Virtues and Vices
The Chinese placed firm emphasis on having the correct values, which are usually related to Confucian and religious teachings. Vices such as gambling, laziness and greed should be avoided in order to prevent retribution.
Station 5
Site of Former Villa
This used to be the place where the Aw Brothers were located. However, the family were forced to abandon the house during World War II. After the various air raids during the war, the family was so devastated by the damage done to the house that they decided to demolish it, explaining why it no longer stands today.
Station 6
Journey to the West
Journey to the West is a world-famous tale of a holy monk, Tripitaka, and his 3 disciples, travelling far into the Western Paradise on foot to obtain Buddhist scriptures in the Tang Dynasty. While travelling, the 4 meet numerous demons and spirits who set out to do nothing but kill Tripitaka to eat his flesh. This is because it is believed that consumption of his holy flesh will grant immortality. His 3 disciples worked together and offset one another’s weaknesses, and protected Tripitaka from all dangers. The story teaches the importance of the values of teamwork and determination to reach one’s goal.
Station 7
Aw Family Memorials
At Haw Par Villa, there are a total of 4 memorials. One for the parents of the Aw Brothers, One for the Aw Brothers themselves, and Aw Hoe, Aw Boon Haw’s eldest son. This emphasises the Chinese value of filial piety.
Station 8
Pavillion and Pagoda
At this place, the pavilion and pagoda are located in the middle of a pond. Try spotting the terrapins in the water! In the pavilion sits Sakyamuni. When he achieved enlightenment, he realised that the cause of human suffering was ignorance and thought Dharma the steps to overcome ignorance, to all who were willing to learn out of his compassion for human beings.
Station 9
Ten Courts of Hell
In Chinese belief, one goes to hell after death and has a judgement passed before either being sent to paradise, or sent through the courts of hell. There are 10 Courts of Hell, each punishing sins one has committed while as a living person. As the courts progress, the sins being punished for get more and more severe. At the end of the courts, a final judgement is passed and will be given a magic tea to forget their past. They will then be led to the wheel of reincarnation to be reborn as an animal or as a human, in suffering or in comfort. This all depends on one’s past deeds.
Did You Know?
The place used to be a dragon head instead of the grey building you see today. There used to be a slow boat ride through this area, back when it was still a water theme park, but it has since been converted to its current form due to lack of visitors.
